Palm Beach Film Festival kicks off with unusually violent thriller

Monday, April 4, 2016

If a stranger comes to your door with a bottle of wine in hand, claiming to be your new neighbor, do not let him in. That is the lesson of “Money,” the violent thriller that will have its world premiere Wednesday evening, launching the 21st annual Palm Beach International Film Festival.

Back and forth it goes. Once John is trussed up, he plays mind games with Christine, trying to persuade her to untie him. When he gets free, he returns to his malevolent ways threatening to kill them all. The result is a standoff that lasts through the night, until Carl the gardener arrives in the morning and becomes involved.

Yes, “Money” is bound to remind you of other films of captors and captives, but the performances by cold-blooded intruder Jamie Bamber as John, drugged up Jesse Williams as Sean and the rest of the ensemble cast should keep you gripping the armrests of your theater seat.

Review: Cat-and-mouse game ‘Money’ falls short as thriller

Monday, April 4, 2016 - By Robert Sims

Special to the Daily News - Money (2 out of 4 stars)

All talk and no action, the Palm Beach International Film Festival opening-night film Money unfolds as an efficiently paced but unimaginatively staged housebound thriller that’s fueled by greed and corruption.

Martín Rosete’s feature-length directorial debut pits two pharmaceutical employees (TheTwilight Saga’s Kellan Lutz and Grey’s Anatomy’s Jesse Williams) against the thief (Battlestar Galactica’s Jamie Bamber) who plans to pilfer the $5 million they received for selling company secrets. Stuck in the middle are Lutz’s shocked wife (Somebody Up There Likes Me’s Jess Weixler) and Williams’ opportunistic date (Spanish TV star Lucía Guerrero).

Bamber initially has the upper hand. He cons his way into Lutz and Weixler’s swanky New York house to hold everyone hostage in exchange for the cash. Even when the tables are turned, Bamber manages to get into the heads of Weixler and Guerrero to the point he seemingly regained the psychological edge over Lutz and Williams.

For a thriller that’s set in a single location, Rosete doesn’t show enough creativity to turn one family’s dream home into a house of horrors. He does bring some tension to the cat-and-mouse game that’s played inside and outside the house, but Josep Ciutat’s predictable twist-filled scripts lack the necessary witty and/or razor-sharp dialogue to keep us fully engaged. He also fills the house with several stupid characters who deserve to be slapped upside their head.

Money’s willing cast isn’t given much to work with, so it isn’t their fault that they fail to make us hang on their every word during this gabfest. Williams gets caught up in his coke fiend’s paranoia, and Bamber’s Hugh Grant impression wears a bit thin, but their energy and commitment to Money is appreciated compared with Lutz’s lethargic response to his dire circumstance. Money, it seems, can’t buy you a leading man who’s alert and ready to spring into action.

Money will screen at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the Muvico Parisian 20 at CityPlace, 545 Hibiscus St., West Palm Beach.
